When delivering in a hospital delivery room, it is common to monitor the health of the fetus during delivery with a fetal monitor.
A fetal monitor is a kind of medical device that monitors the health of the fetus by measuring the fetal heart rate during delivery.
There is also a fetal monitor that allows you to check the fetal heart rate and beat interval by placing an electrode connected to the fetal monitoring device on the abdominal wall of the delivery unit (maternity).
There is also a fetal monitor that connects and checks the number and intervals of the fetus’ heartbeat
. It is connected to a graph so that the fetal heartbeat displayed on the monitor of the fetal monitor can be printed on paper.
If necessary, the health status of the fetus can be objectively monitored during the entire delivery process, and if necessary, the fetus may be examined uniformly with a monitor. In some hospitals, delivery status is routinely monitored for all delivery, while others are monitored only when deemed necessary.
Since the health status of the fetus on a monitor cannot always be accurate, studies have shown that routine monitoring may increase the delivery rate of a cesarean section.
Monitoring the fetus through the vaginal cavity can lead to bacterial infection in scalp wounds caused by electrode connections. However, it is said that it is possible to monitor more accurately than when monitoring on the delivery department’s stomach.
High-risk delivery or when the baby to be born is premature, or when there is a need to deliver with more monitoring of the fetus, the fetus is monitored with a Doppler Ultrasound machine rather than using a fetal monitor. Copyright ⓒ 2014 John Sangwon Lee, MD., FAAP
