경구용 피임약을 복용해 피임을 할 때 그 약으로 인해 부작용이 생길 수 있다. 그런 경우, 경구용 피임약으로 피임을 더 이상 할 수 없다. 그럴 때나 콘돔 이 외의 다른 종류의 피임방법으로 피임할 수 없는 경우에는 콘돔으로 피임할 수 있다.

남성의 음경에 쓰고 피임하는 남성용 콘돔도 있고, 남성은 콘돔을 사용하고 그와 동시에 여성은 살정제나 살정젤리, 또는 다른 피임방법을 이용해서 피임을 할 수 있다.

요즘 여성이 여성용 콘돔으로 피임하기도 한다.

콘돔 속에 사정된 정액 속 정자들이 여성의 질강 속으로 들어갈 수 없고 자궁강 속으로 들어갈 수 없기 때문에 피임이 된다.

피임할 때 쓴 콘돔 그 자체로 부작용이 생기지 않는 것이 보통이다. 사용하기가 쉽고 값이 싸고 피임효과도 상당히 좋기 때문에 남성이 가장 많이 쓰는 피임방법 중 하나다.

바늘구멍 만한 작은 구멍이 나 있거나 조금만 파열된 콘돔을 사용할 때 콘돔 속에 사정된 정액 속 정자가 질 속으로 들어가서 임신될 수 있다.

성교를 하기 바로 전에 여성은 정자를 죽일 수 있는 살정제나 살정젤리 피임약을 질 속에 넣고, 그와 동시에 남성은 콘돔을 사용해서 피임하면 거의 100% 피임효과를 볼 수 있다.

경구용 피임약으로 피임할 때와 달리, 성교를 할 때마다 남자가 자기의 음경에 콘돔을 씨우고 성관계를 하기 때문에 귀찮은 점도 있다.

콘돔을 쓰고 성교를 할 때 성감이 좋지 않다고 주장하는 남성들도 있지만 콘돔으로 피임할 때 부작용이 거의 없고, 의사의 처방 없이 언제든지 어디서든지 쉽게 콘돔을 구할 수 있고 필요에 따라 쉽게 사용할 수 있어서 콘돔으로 피임을 하는 것은 대단히 실용적인 피임방법이다.
