Whether to breastfeed the baby after delivery or to feed the baby with artificial nutrition should be decided as early as possible during pregnancy.
Even if you plan to feed your baby with artificial nutrition before delivery, there are cases in which you do not feed the baby with artificial nutrition after delivery, but feed the mother’s breast milk. On the contrary, there are cases where the mother’s milk is planned to be fed to the baby before delivery, but artificial nutrition is given to the baby after delivery.
In the first few days after delivery, even if the milk is not secreted well, the baby is given the mother’s milk every 2 to 3 hours, each time feeding one breast for 5 to 7 minutes and both breasts for 10 to 15 minutes.
When breastfeeding a baby, if all of the breast milk is fastened, the mammary glands are stimulated and the milk is secreted better. In addition, after the baby is breastfeeding, squeeze it out with wet hands or milking equipment, or store it in the refrigerator.
When feeding a baby with artificial nutrition after delivery, more milk is secreted into the breast, which can cause the breast to be swollen and sore for 2 to 3 days after delivery. When your breasts are swollen and painful, support your breasts with a well-fitting bra.
It is best not to express milk by hand or with a milking machine, and to avoid irritation of the breast as much as possible.
If your breasts continue to be swollen and sore, contact your doctor for help. Copyright ⓒ 2014 John Sangwon Lee, MD., FAAP
