Oral contraceptives 경구용 피임약
Oral contraceptives
Oral contraceptives are hormonal contraceptives made by artificially synthesizing components such as estrogen and progesterone secreted from the female ovary.
There are many types of oral contraceptives and should be used according to your doctor’s prescription.
It is common to take estrogen daily for the first 14 to 15 days of the menstrual cycle, followed by the female hormones estrogen and progesterone for the next 5 to 6 days. When you take an oral female hormonal contraceptive, the action of the hormone suppresses the secretion of gonadotropin secreted from the pituitary gland, and the egg does not ovulate in the ovary.
When contraceptive with oral contraceptives, the contraceptive effect is theoretically almost 100%.
However, adolescent children often do not use oral contraceptives according to the doctor’s prescription, so there are many times when they cannot see 100% contraceptive effects. In rare cases, severe side effects can occur with oral contraceptives. In addition, when a nursing mother uses oral contraceptives, contraceptives are secreted into breast milk.
Contraceptive ingredients in breast milk can be absorbed into the nursing baby’s body. For this reason, breastfeeding mothers should not use other types of oral contraceptives other than Progestin contraceptives.
Contraception with oral contraceptives should also be avoided until the mental and physical changes that come from postpartum pregnancy or delivery are completely recovered. You may vomit in the first 2 to 3 months you start taking oral contraceptives. Bleeding in the uterus can occur irregularly, and the amount of bleeding in the uterus can be less during menstruation than when the pill is not taken.
You can also menstruate every other month or two. In other words, menstruation can become irregular. Sometimes it can be temporarily or permanently infertile. Other side effects such as weight gain and emotional changes can occur. When taking oral contraceptives, be especially careful of the following:
Before starting contraception with oral contraceptives, be sure to consult a doctor and undergo regular female checkups while taking oral contraceptives. When taking oral contraceptives, blood clots abnormally in blood vessels, which can lead to blood clots. In rare cases, blood clots can form in the blood vessels of the brain.
Women with diseases of blood clotting in blood vessels should not use oral contraceptives. While taking oral contraceptives, recovery after surgery may be slower than usual. You should not take oral contraceptives from 4 weeks before receiving major surgical treatment. Women who have had heart disease, cerebral blood clots, uterine cancer or breast cancer of any kind in the past or present should not use birth control pills. Taking oral contraceptives during pregnancy can cause birth defects in the fetus. Therefore, you should not take oral contraceptives when you suspect you are pregnant or during pregnancy.
If you continue to use birth control pills and then stop taking them suddenly, you may become pregnant soon.
Also, if you become pregnant within 3 months after you no longer take oral contraceptives, your baby may develop congenital malformations.
If you are using oral contraceptives and plan to become pregnant soon, you should stop taking them at least 3 months before your pregnancy.
Contraception should not be used with oral contraceptives when there is any disease in the blood vessels of the brain or other blood vessels.
There are many other side effects that can occur when contraception with oral contraceptives is described above. Copyright ⓒ 2014 John Sangwon Lee, MD., FAAP
